Could you imagine living in the Renaissance in this days? There are lots of rocky villages in Iran and around the world, that can look like Renaissance-era and Varkaneh village is a real one.
This rocky village with all special stone streets located in Hamedan province; one of the coldest provinces in Iran. The local people built the village by stones not only to make it beautiful also for preventing cold weather, and they didn’t know that this village will be one of the most dazzling ones in the future.
The red and brownstones used in buildings, has made the village so impressive that lots of tourists come annually here to take photos and experience the atmosphere. However, Varkaneh has dozens of other natural sceneries and highlights too. Here are some of the most wonderful and most famous ones as followings;
Varkaneh Cemetery
There is no tombstone in this cemetery! yes, that’s true!
No tombstones in this cemetery and it’s the most outstanding distinction between Varkaneh cemetery and other ones. Keep reading and make yourself ready for the strange features of Varkaneh.
Varkaneh neighborhoods
“Darb masjed” neighborhood is the oldest neighborhood of Varkaneh including a mosque, a bath, and a telecommunication station.
“Kordha” neighborhood located in the east of the village and includes the school, that is just one and use for all students of Varkaneh village.
“Abas Abad” neighborhood that is more developed than others and includes a bakery and a mill.
As you can see, everything is like the Renaissance in this village.
“Mehri Khanoom” castle in Varkaneh village
One woman was the master of the village, she called Mehri Khanoom (meaning Ms.Mehri). The castle with its cross plan and area of 330 square meters on 2 floors, is located in the south, overlooking the village. The building and history of the castle have made it one of the most famous highlights of this region, that welcomes thousands of tourists every year.
Old Stables
After Naghikhan Gharagozlou; the master of the village, his girl became the master of the village and worked as a horse breeder in Varkaneh. She built two large stables near Varkaneh village and bred unique and original horses, that were used at the court before the Islamic revolution. Currently, the stables are the sights of the village.

Dense and fruitful gardens
The presence of the Simin and Varkeneh rivers and the constant flows of Qanat and Sarhayan fountain especially in summer, the gardens of the village are always dense and full of walnuts, apricots, grapes, and apples and gave a special beauty to the village.
Wonderful mountains
The mountains around the village and the valleys of Khan and Jen made impressive natural sceneries for tourists to come and visit here. Varkaneh is one of the tourist villages of Hamedan province and was introduced as a special tourism zone in Iran.
The gardens of the village are always dense and full of walnuts, apricots, grapes, and apples.
Other highlights
Baba Tahir poets and Ashik music are popular in Varkaneh and are played in weddings as traditional music, some kind of folk music called Sarbazi and Sepa are common in the region too.
Being located on the way of Nomads has made Varkaneh village one of the best places for visiting Nomads and getting to know more about their lifestyle. Every year lots of tourists come near the village to take photos of the Nomads tents.
