Located along the Aras river, near the borders of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Jolfa is a lovely town with lots of historical sites and natural dazzling landscapes. The city has numerous tourist attractions, and embracing many historic churches indicates that most of the city's inhabitants were religious minorities. The presence of many markets and shopping centers as well as being located in the free trade zone has made Jolfa one of the most important commercial hubs of the country. Jolfa also has a very beautiful nature whose beauties will fascinate you.
Aras River originating from the heights of Hezar Barakeh in the south of Erzurum in Turkey is flowing along the Iranian border. This beautiful, long river flows from west to east and passes through the provinces of Ardabil, West Azerbaijan, and East Azerbaijan. Lying in the vicinity of the Aras River has made Jolfa enjoy a very good climate particularly during summer. There is also a fascinating waterfall which is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iran and a must-see natural attraction in East Azerbaijan.
Saint Stepanos Monastery is the main highlight which is also inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The construction date goes back to the 9th century; however, it was seriously damaged in the earthquake and renovated again during Safavid and Qajar dynasties in Iran.
To reach this place, having arrived in Jolfa, you should get yourself prepared to walk up the last 1km to the Monastery, which may be difficult for elderlies. The church is surrounded by a stunning greenery area; climbing up the mountain behind the monastery would let you enjoy the appealing view of the valley.
